As Ubuntu is overexposed in the Linux world, it’s refreshing to see a review talking about other Linux distributions like the review referenced below. And according Maximum PC one of the best distribution is Fedora. But as they also highlighted, every distribution has strengths and weaknesses:

Fedora is secure but lacks a dedicated administration application

Ubuntu has a huge application base and benefit from a very good support from it community

OpenSUSE has a dedicated administration tool (Yast) but lacks applications and support

Yesterday I installed OpenSuse 10.3 on my home PC. And I’m impressed by the progress made in Linux desktop installation over a few years. I remember how painful it was to install older distributions like Red Hat 6.x. The OpenSuse installation is very straightforward. The installation takes care of almost everything. I just had to change the default partionning scheme a little to keep my Windows XP partition as the default one. And it’s fast compared to Windows. The longer part was the server updates at the end of the installation.

In fact we learn that:

Microsoft hates Asus because the EEE doesn’t embed any Microsoft software: OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office and Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

Apple and Dell hates Asus because they were planing to release a flash based mini-laptop. And Asus did it before them.

Palm also planed to ship a mini-laptop called Foleo powered by Palm proprietary OS. But they’re late with regards to EEE.

The only PC company that loves Asus is Intel (Of course EEE embed Intel processors). This post provides also a list of EEE review. All of them are positive.

APC published a very good article that compares Ubuntu to Windows when executing various tasks (mp3 encoding, Web browsing, Media playback, etc). Ubuntu is very good for most of the task sbut remains behing windows for some of them like mp3 encoding and Webcam management. The complete Ubuntu rating is list below:

First impressions: Pass — No problems. The task can be completed exactly as under Windows.

Getting Updates: Optimal — Passes with flying colours. The task could not only be completed, but better or easier than under Windows.

Web browsing: Pass

Media playback: Iffy — When a task could only be partially completed, or completed but not without issue.

File management: Pass

Network shares: Pass

Uploading to sites: Optimal

CD and DVD burning: Optimal

MP3 Encoding: Iffy

Talking to the iPod: Optimal

Taking the upgrade plunge: Optimal

Evolutionary email: Optimal

Open Office: Optimal

Web StarCam: Iffy

Plug in Cameras: Flop — Not possible to complete at all. Probably not a good thing.

USB drives: Optimal

Image management: Optimal

Image editing: Optimal

Printing: Pass

Managing disk space: Flop

Video production: Optimal

Native games: Flop Pass

Transgaming: Iffy
