A French Article In The Top Ten Of Delicious

It’s the first time that I see a French article in the top 10 of Delicious.
And the funny thing is that this article is about Minitel. Minitel was the terminal used in France in the eighties and nineties before the rise of Internet. This probably means that a lot of people are still interested by this device.

It’s the interview of the president of the oldest french ISP
about how Internet is becoming more and more a centralised network.
Like our old Minitel was.
For exemple, by using YouTube or Gmail…
Your not totaly right,
In fact this is an interview about how internet is slowly becoming the minitel
*On the minitel to contact your friend you need to do 3615 MESSAGERY_NETWORK (0.5 €/min) and then you can chat with your friend only on this messagery network
*On the internet you can send a mail to yourfriend@yourfriendmachine
*But now you go to facebook and send a message to your friend but it is only working with facebook friend and if facebook goes down, you are f*ck*d
He also defend the fact that if we have no net-neutrality the internet will become a new kind of minitel
This guy is very popular amongs the geek and his becoming the guru of the self-hosting ( I’m not sure to have the right expression I am talking about hosting our web page but also our mail and our XMPP adress with our own server at home)
Howerver very few people dare do go to self hosting, firstly because the ISP offers only ADSL and no SDSL (Except if you are professionnal and can spend a lot of money :p) and because if most of the french modem are really performant box ( Most of the provider give you a modem called *box which include router/firewall but also a phone plug to call over IP ( including normal phone worldwide) and TV) these box does not include http server and are not customizable ( you dont have a root acces)
And with these difficulties self hosting is (sadly) not so popular but if everybody start doing that things will change
You’re right. This interview is more about the future of Internet that could be Minitel 2.0 because of:
– Lack of Net Neutrality
– Filtering
It is a very interesting reading.
