Some resource links about TOR and Bittorrent

When writting my previous post I found some interesting documents about TOR, Bittorrent and more generally peer to peer anonymity. All this reading helped my to understand that using Bittorrent with TOR for anonymous peer to peer doesn’t make sense. In my previous post I suggested to use TOR to route trafic between trackers and Bittorrent clients, when connecting to public trackers. But this option only allow to be anonymous with regards to the trackers. When a Bittorrent client connects to another peer , it uses his real IP address. So anonymity is lost. The documents listed below should also help you to throw some light on the subject.
- How to Use Azureus with Tor Hidden Service Bittorrent Tracker? : This post describe how to configure Azureus with TOR. But this might be extended to other Bittorrent clients as well.
- part-3 azureus anonymity : This article and the following comments are very interesting. The article explains how to configure TOR and Azureus to use hidden service (the hidden service is exposed via TOR and allow other Bittorrent clients to connect to your client). And when using hidden service, communications between peers are routed through TOR. This is the wrong thing. Some comments suggested to use I2P network instead of TOR for peer to peer anonymity. The drawback of I2P network is that you can only connect to peers using also the I2P network and not all the BT clients.
- Anonymous Bittorrent : Another description of setting up bitorrent with TOR using bitlord BT client.
- How to set up Azureus to work with Tor: This is the reference document to understand all the architectures.
- PlanetPeer-How to set up Azureus to work with Tor: Based on the reference document above, this document add some step by step configuration instruction with screenshots of Azureus configuration panel. Very good reference. PlanetPeer board is also a very good board dedicated to anonymous peer to peer.
- HOWTO: Anonymous communication with Tor - some hints and some pitfalls: Mainly dedicated to TOR on Linux but very good.
- Anonymous Network: Very good academic description of TOR and I2P networks.
